Something I never thought I’d write: A love letter to my epilepsy

This feels like the most vulnerable post I've done, and I can’t believe I’m actually writing it.

The overwhelming majority of you selected a love letter to my epilepsy when I put out a poll.

A few years ago, my therapist asked me to write a letter to my epilepsy.

At that point, the letter was more like hate mail.

Since then it looks different, and I’ve chosen to turn it into a love letter.

Dear epilepsy, I spent years wishing you’d leave.

But instead...

I’ve learnt to live beside you.

You took away certainty.

But replaced it with purpose.

A new way to look at the world.

Without you, I wouldn’t be doing this.

Sharing, writing, creating community, helping people feel less alone.

Every time you’ve taken a part of me, I’ve chosen to gain another.

Every seizure, every medication.

It’s taken something.

Memory, confidence, independence… but every time I’ve built something stronger in its place.

And that strength is unmatched.

You’ve taught me that everyone is fighting something we can’t see.

Strength is quiet.

And our purpose on this planet is to support each other.

I’ve learnt what compassion looks like.

I can grieve the person who didn’t know you.

But I choose to love the person you’ve forced me to become.

Love, lucca x
